Into Oblivion (Starcrossed Book 1)

 Prologue

    The kingdom of Xepherion was a quiet place. One that many would flock to when in need of a break from their everyday lives, or to spend time with loved ones for a special occasion. It was a bustling kingdom full of beautiful rivers, lush greenery and many, many mountains. Though these mountains are what made the kingdom so unique. The light would often reflect off of the chiseled surface, giving the illusion of a floating island.

    Xepherion wasn’t just a place to visit, it was the home of many Catfolk as well. These creatures were very human-like, the only differing factors were the furry ears that rested on their heads and the tails that sprouted from their lower backs. They were a passive species, known very well for their talents in healing and illusion magics though, only chosen Catfolk could wield these powers.

 The kingdom thrived for many years under King Avion and Queen Lumeirra. The two brought light and love into their subjects' hearts, often hosting many events that species from all over would travel to attend. They also created the most formidable Royal Guard no other kingdom could compete with, this is what kept the kingdom thriving and safe.

    However this all changed on the day of the birth of their second child. An old, well known prophet from the Kingdom of Eurus presented herself before the King and Queen. Having outlived many other great prophets, she was said to be wise and all-knowing. Some even say she was favored by the gods due to her long lifespan.

    The prophet held her head low, her long curved horns peeked out from underneath a black cloak and her eyes, a radiant purple hue. She stepped forward, using a long, hand carved staff to balance herself as she made her way over to the Queen, a troubled look on her face. She had come bearing not only a gift for the newborn princess, but words of a prophecy long forgotten.

    When the prophet made her way to the Queen's bedside, she bowed her head respectfully before presenting her gift. In her hands she held a tattered, old book with the words; The Guardian of Xepherion. The Queen cast a confused look toward the Prophet as she reached out to take the book from her.

    “The next guardian has been chosen.” She finally spoke, taking a step back to create some space between them. The room fell silent at her words.

    “But, I do not understand,” The Queen spoke, clearing her throat,”What does this mean?”

    “Do you remember what I told you on the day you took the throne?” The prophet asked, reaching up to lower her hood.

    The Queen’s eyes widened as she realized exactly who was standing before her. The long black hair, deep purple irises, there was no mistaking it. This old woman was not only a prophet, known by many across the lands, but her mentor from many moons ago.

   “How…” She started,”You disappeared a millenia ago!”

    Up until now, the old prophet had kept her identity hidden, a tactic used by those who wish to have some solace from time to time. The prophet raised her hand as to ask for no further questions to be asked.

    “That is unimportant my dear Lumeirra.” She stated, lowering her hand again and making eye contact with her former apprentice,”The time has come for the prophecy to be fulfilled.”

    The king looked from the prophet to his wife as to ask for an explanation. The Queen lowered her head to look at the beautiful baby girl in her arms. The prophet took this as her queue to leave, bowing once more before pulling her hood back on and quietly making her way out of the room. The queen’s eyes teared up as she held her baby close.

    The doors shut softly behind the prophet as she stepped out onto the stairway. Her lips parted uttering lowly as she carefully took each step descending from the castle;

  “Since the dawn of time, the stars have kept their silence. Until the hour of Shadow’s rise was named. When darkness breaks the river of ages, one guardian shall awaken, and by their hand Xepherion shall be made whole again.”

    The prophecy that had been passed down from one Queen to the next was finally coming true, and there was only one person who could stop it.
